Palliative Care Prolongs Life Of Cancer Patients Jul 22

According to a study published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, palliative care prolongs the life of cancer patients. The study was conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital on randomly assigned 151 lung cancer patients. Some patients were made to undergo traditional oncology treatment while the rest oncology treatment with palliative care.

The lung cancer patients belonging to the latter group were found to live about three months longer than those of the former group. The patients in the latter group, receiving the palliative care, were observed to live nearly 11.6 months. On the other hand, those belonging to the former group were seen to live about 8.9 months. The study started in June 2006. It ended in December 2009, when about 70% of the patients under study had passed away.

Traditionally, palliative care is provided to a hospitalized patient in the last week of his life. A doctor and author of the paper from the same research institution said, “We thought it made sense to start them at the time of diagnosis. And we were thrilled to see such a huge impact. It shows that palliative care and cancer care aren’t mutually exclusive.” She also mentioned that the study was restricted by the fact that it was conducted at one single site. A specialized group of doctors were treating the patients. To add to it, the patients who were assigned to receive only standard care were not denied the palliative care when requested by them.

Palliative care involves the treatment which assists relieving the symptoms and improving the quality of a patient’s life.
